The Netherlands Hosts Europe's Largest Digital Military Exercise

Next week, the Netherlands will host Europe’s largest air defense exercise ever. Joint Project Optic Windmill 2025 (JPOW25) will take place largely in the virtual domain, with fifteen NATO allies preparing for enemy air attacks by integrating their various weapons systems.

Hundreds of military personnel, including a large number of IT specialists, will participate in the exercise from March 17 to 27 at the Lieutenant General Best Barracks in Vredepeel, North Limburg. They will test scenarios and verify procedures from strategic levels down to tactical execution. Developers, radar technicians, and missile experts will collaborate to establish protective shields over designated areas, aiming to counter all forms of airborne threats.

Each physical system included in the exercise has at least one active operational unit participating. This ensures that NATO’s air defense forces can fully integrate their available radar technology and missile systems.

The Role of IT and Software

IT plays a crucial role in JPOW25. Software is used to simulate air and missile defense operations, allowing participants to train and refine tactics without requiring live flight exercises.

The focus is on integration and interoperability. Software enables the seamless connection of radar and missile defense systems across NATO allies, ensuring that these systems can communicate effectively and operate as a cohesive defense network.

Data Analysis for Strategy Optimization

Another key component is performance analysis. Advanced software tools are used to evaluate the effectiveness of defense systems and tactics deployed during the exercise. The insights gained help identify areas for improvement and refine future military strategies.
